“We worry much less about media consolidation and scarcity of information than we did when there were just three main broadcast television networks and a handful of local newspapers in each area.”

“There is no doubt that the rise of the Internet has had many free speech benefits,” Hasen writes. Hasen does not villainize the internet as the source of all that is evil about modern politics. Hasen expands on Volokh’s concept of “cheap speech,” defining it as “speech that is both inexpensive to produce and often of markedly low social value.” Hasen devotes the first part of the book to an even-handed evaluation of the impact of cheap speech on American democracy. He examines the costs and benefits of cheap speech and presents carefully crafted proposals that attempt to address the harms without straying from core First Amendment values or from falling into a moral panic about misinformation. Hasen has written an extraordinary, thorough and fair examination of the impact of misinformation on democracy.

In “Cheap Speech: How Disinformation Poisons Our Politics-and How to Cure It,” Hasen takes on the lofty task of examining the impact of cheap speech on American elections, politics and democracy. Many volumes can and should be written about the effects of the rapid evolution of cheap speech on discrete areas of American life.įortunately, Rick Hasen has done just that. More than a quarter-century later, the cheap speech that Volokh predicted has upended commerce, art, politics, news and community. To say that Volokh’s article was prophetic would be an understatement. In 1995, Eugene Volokh published a law review article in which he predicted that the rapidly growing internet would “dramatically reduce the costs of distributing speech” and that “the new media order that these technologies will bring will be much more democratic and diverse than the environment we see now.” The concept, which Volokh dubbed “cheap speech,” would mean that “far more speakers-rich and poor, popular and not, banal and avant garde-will be able to make their work available to all.” Hasen, “Cheap Speech: How Disinformation Poisons Our Politics-and How to Cure It” (Yale University Press, 2022). All in all, this app is a definite keeper for me.A review of Richard L. I haven't experienced having to have an 'account' yet. The only way to use it without, is with the saved phrases. It is also notable that you cannot use this app unless you have an internet connection. The description says that it can read emails, but either I'm really slow witted, or it doesn't do that. Sometimes I forget, & that is just a big hot mess :) it would also be nice if the phrases saved in alphabetical order in addition to the order entered, as it saves them now. I hate having to select everything & delete. The only thing that could make this app better, is if I could push a button to delete out all of what I had previously written. The voices are among the most realistic I've heard. I like the ability to save often-used phrases. Until now! I am so grateful for this app that allows me to communicate again without playing charades (which my family is horrible at) Even if it does takes me a bit longer now than actually speaking. In the meantime, I have 4 kids and an amazing husband who have no idea what I'm saying. Hopefully, it's use will come back on its own. I am not supposed to use it for a while to help it heal. During the surgery, one of my voice box nerves became paralyzed.
